False Equivalence of Student Unions

Proclamation:

"There is a {black | asian | lgbtq | pacific islander | etc} {student union | pride | other organization} why can't we have one for whites?"

Approximation of the proclaimed point of view:

I am for everyone being equal, and this seems like a preference for others over my group.

Rebuttal:

"The reason there was no white student union, is that white students don't need to fight to get equal access and representation, don't need to organize in order to feel some sense of belonging, don't need to carve out a space where they can exercise their freedoms without fear, don't need to work to find a group where they can discuss their concerns without explaining why they are valid.

That is a big part of privilege right there. What comes effortless for the majority in a population needs this extra level of effort to achieve for many others."

False Equivalence of Which Lives Matter

Proclamation:

"All lives matter! Why is it bad to say that?"

Approximation of the proclaimed point of view:

I am for everyone being equal, and this seems like a preference for others over my group.

Rebuttal(s):

  • "The challenge with "all lives matter" as a statement is the fact it minimizes actual problems others are trying to solve.

People don't disagree that all lives matter. But the problem with the "all lives matter" statement is the source from where it originated. It was created as a response to black lives matter. It was created to cancel and minimize "black lives matter". It was created to say that we don't actually empathize with black lives that are crying, begging, screaming, and demanding help for the violence they endure.

If you truly believe all lives matter then don't use "all lives matter" because at its root, it actually doesn't believe all lives matter."

  • "My neighbor has a sign that says it best: "All lives matter when black lives matter.""

  • "If you believe all lives matter, then don't use "all lives matter" because the source and purpose of that statement does not actually believe all lives matter as it is used to disregard the "black lives matter" movement. What part do you disagree with? I'm open to discussion. "

  • "All Lives Matter alone is currently unfortunately only something aspirational, which is what Black Lives Matter is trying to point out. Black Lives Matter currently must be said because too many people don't act like they do."

Potential avenues of pushback:

"I don't disagree with the fact that black lives matter, I disagree with the specific rhetoric from the organization known as Black Lives Matter"
